Guns N Roses - Sweet Child O Mine

There were five members in this group. The genre of this band is rock, most rock videos normally are the band performing live or in a studio. They normally do this to represent the genre, so you know what type of music its going to be. This video is set in black and white, I feel this is done because it give a more 80′s feel to it, and also because the rock genre doesn't really involve bright colours. At the beginning of the video, theres a mid shot of the main singer, Axl Rose. I think this was done in order for the viwers to be aware of the main vocalist. There is alot of jump cuts to other locations other than the hall they are performing in, the other footage is of women, which are actually the band members girlfriends in real life. They possibly used these girls in he video, to give that “sex, drugs and rock & roll” feel to the video and this “Guns n Roses” image. There is one lyric - " Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place where as a child I'd hide". There is a link here between the lyrics and visual, as the woman's hair in this video is very big. The first and second verse both use the lyrics "reminds me of", which for the listeners, would give them a better understanding of what the song is about - his girlfriend/band members girlfriends. They are also wearing very dated cloths and are wearing trade mark cloths such as Slash. the lead guitarist is wearing a top hat, this is very symbolic because there is just a shot of his hat and you know its him wearing it because that is how he is represented. Axel the lead singer is wearing a bandana which is also symbolic because he wears it on stage. The video mainly cosists midshots, and sometimes there are establishing shots of the band. There are also shots of camera men filming them, this is symbolic to the band because it shows that they are famous. There is a lyric in the chorus it say “sweet love of mine” when he says this there is a jump cut to two women, therefore this lyric is visual. At the beginning of the video, there is a very obvious establishing shot of the bands name "Guns N Roses". I think this was used because it would engage the viewers, and make them want to watch the video and carry on listening to the song as it is written by a very popular band at the time.
As you can see, all of the members in this band have long hair. This was the fashion back in the 1980s, and is still trending worldwide today. I think long hair is popular whe it comes to the genre "rock", as they won't look silly when they toss and headbang. Also, rock bands are common for there lack of careabout appearence and popularity, and just love to make good rock music, so this might be another element.
